Events & Appearances

I appear from time to time at public radio stations and literary venues to discuss current events and interview interesting authors. Since I reported on the early years of Russia’s war against Ukraine, for instance, I’m called upon to discuss the latest developments in light of that history. Here are a few recent examples of those appearances:

Maine Public Radio

Early last year, I participated in a Maine Public Radio webinar with my former NPR colleague Lucian Kim on the war in Ukraine, in which we were interviewed by Maine Public’s president and CEO, Rick Schneider. Lucian Kim was my successor as NPR’s Moscow-based correspondent, but his experience in Russia and Ukraine goes back for many years before that. I think it’s fair to say that our conversation brought a clear-eyed view of Vladimir Putin’s ruthless ambitions, his strengths and weaknesses in the assault on Ukraine. You can see the conversation here on Vimeo:

Utah Public Radio

I also discussed the Russian attacks on Ukraine in a special edition of Utah Public Radio’s Access Utah with host Tom Williams.

Virtual Book Tour

My experiences in Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union have introduced me to many fascinating experts and writers, including Ann Hagedorn, the author of the brilliant (and chilling) true story
SLEEPER AGENT: The Atomic Spy in America Who Got Away.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Ann as part of New York’s International House Virtual Book Tour Program.
